As the title says, I'm thinking about running a Merlin reverse Big Bang.

Basically as the old one has remained silent for a long time, and repeated attempts to contact the mods is simply met with silence, I've come to the conclusion that they will not be running the fest again, but talking to people it seems like there is enough interest to run it successfully.

But before I do, I need some help from you guy's.

Last year I know they suffered horrible from scheduling conflicts, so I need you lot's help to find the best time of year to run. Comment below with when is busiest, and when you think might be a good time. (I will also talk to our lovely modly god, Kitty to help arrange a good time)

Second of all, and the previous mods have not responded to me, I will need to make a whole new comm. And with a new comm we also need a new name.

The max characters for a name is 15, I believe, but I think that's the only restriction. So please leave suggestions below. :D

YAAAAY!!!!

Okay, I don't know the merlin fest schedule that well. Summer obviously isn't that great because Big Bang and pornalot. Maybe in fall/winter, or winter/spring might work?

For name: the first thing that came to mind was "Backwards Bang" or "Backwards Big Bang" ... I think the first one rolls off the tongue more easily, but ultimately it's up to you. You can have either, both, or neither suggestion :)

Yes, I was thinking either earlier in the year or late. Probably want to try and avoid December because of Merlin holidays and Winterknights.

I'll probably make a polls with the suggestions, but 'Backwards Big Bang' is too long even without the spaces.

*waves hands in air excitedly*

I was also hoping to start it up again, any chance we could co-mod?? :)

In my head a kind of october to february worked as acbb isn't on then and you/we could extend it into march if people felt they needed more time over christmas?? (might be something to ask chatzy?)

merlinrvbb is free as is merlinreverse

Shame the old mods have been quiet, it would be easier to carry on from what they set up!!

Yes definitely!

Yes, I was thinking then might be best, though we would have to be careful of the winter fests.

Neither if the old mods have updated their lj in a long time, it's a shame to have lost them.

I really like the name merlinreverse !!!

It's clean and simple and I think it stays with the theme and idea of the fest and people familiar with the type of fest will know what it is - without making it a big bang in the strict sense. That also opens it up to lower word counts as well.

(Unless you were planning for there to be higher word count minimums like a big bang.)

OK, let me provoke you.

I have been thinking about this. I would like artists to make a piece of art (more than one if they so wish), finish it completely and pimp it out to the willing masses of writer(s) of the comm. It doesn't matter if one pic is chosen by many (mine probs won't and that is fine also, I just have to improve my drawing skills then won't I?)

I would like to see the different ways one piece of art can be interpreted \o/

Cut out the collaboration.

Cut out the stress to art more.

Busy artist has spoken

Are you provoked?

That would be cool!

I think multiple interpretations could work really well - i guess slightly depending on the depth of idea portrayed in the art??

Something to consider would be making sure all artists got a writer though ... and i guess some people really enjoy the collab aspect? Maybe two different sections???

these are just musings :)))

From: [identity profile] merlocked18.livejournal.com
yes, different sections could be cool.

Art gallery section

pick a pic and fic (now there's a name and a half :D )

Art can really be viewed so differently. We are all different, thankfully. But you are right, getting a writer is the thing...does one's art inspire anyone. For me it wouldn't be the end of the world. I do, however, enjoy feedback. Maybe allow comments on the art. It would be so cool to read writers reactions to the pieces. What juices up their imaginations in art. What inspires them.

OK I am just brainstorming.

*continues brainstorm*

Merlin pic and fic fest :))

You could have stand-alone art entries for feedback? And maybe anonymous fic/art collabs with artists not revealed until posting and writers basing their fics of summaries (including things the artist does/does not want to see)??

Of course I'll be completely on board for a standard rvbb too! That and ACBB are my favourite times of year :) I'm just throwing ideas about :))

Date: 2016-08-18 03:05 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] yesimafan.livejournal.com
It seems like if the art post came w/a comment from the artist about how much they wanted to collab, the writers could select with that in mind as well as the art (instead of having two different sections of the same fest). Just an idea. I feel like RVBB used to do this but maybe I'm making that up!

In regard to timing, I've been trying for years to find out all the fests that go on, but I usually only find out when they start posting. I know, I'm a SM-fail. Like, I had no idea Merlin Horror was a thing and it started posting last year, and I was blown away. Is that one happening again? Reel Merlin is off this year, so that frees up fall/winter even more. Are there others I'm missing? I know there must be!

(Also, I failed to finish my last rvbb, and the guilt plagues me! Someday I will give my artist the fic their incredible art deserves. *sad, shamed face*

I think the original fest had a section for arts comments on what they didn't want to see. But I kind of thought that collabing was half the fun of the fest to be honest.

I know a lot of the fests, mostly because I don't seem to have the ability to say no. xD I'm not sure about Merlin Horror yet. We'll just have to wait and see.

There's a couple over Christmas time that I'm wry of.

You can do it! *\o/*

If you friend someone like [livejournal.com profile] kitty_fic she pimps pretty much all the fests - and I think there's a blog on tumblr called merlinfests (or something) which keeps getting updated :)

Date: 2016-08-19 04:10 pm (UTC)

Thanks for the advice! I always think I'm following the right things (for instance, I feel like I've followed many tumblrs that pimp various fests, but then I somehow miss the posts about them anyway. LOL), but then I still get caught off guard when someone will say "I'm writing for the WIP Bang" and I'm like "the WHAT?" :) It's not a big deal, and it's mostly my own idiocy when dealing with SM sites.

(Like, I was getting all the posts from ACBB for two years, but somehow this year's posts weren't getting sent to me. I had to re-friend the comm. I don't get it, but oh well!)

Anyway, I am clinging to kitty_fic's LJ now! Thanks for the help!! xo

As I just said to Merls, isn't an art gallery, just like posting your work on Ao3? I'm slightly confused at this suggestion.

I believe the originally already had comments from the artist on what they didn't not want to see.

How would anon collabs work? You can't contact someone if you don't know who they are.

Date: 2016-08-19 05:23 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] side-steppings.livejournal.com
Sorry! Brainstorming got out of hand! - I guess from an artist's point of view the main thing is not feeling pressured to make more art. I really enjoy the collab aspect and seeing if the fic inspires me to do more etc etc but I can understand that for those with less time it might be a little more difficult!

The anon thing was kind like Secret Santa - the artist has their work finished, the writer claims it and then creates something based on the prompt, without knowing who the artist is until posting, therefore no stress on the artist - but at the same time I know that most people really enjoy the collab aspect so it'd be better just to assure artist's that they're under no obligation to make more art!

I'm really excited for just a standard rvbb, brainstorming just went a little wild haha! Thanks for saying we can co-mod :)

Forgive me if I'm confused, but wouldn't the art gallery just be like posting your art in Ao3?

Date: 2016-08-18 09:38 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] narlth.livejournal.com

I'm not sure letting people go wild pumping their stuff is the best of ideas if order is wanted to be had. xD

And like sides said we'd want to make sure everyone gets a writer.

I've really liked getting to collab for acbb, and I thought that was mostly the point of the fest.

And I'm not sure what you're meaning by 'are you provoked'?

Yay! I had so much fun with rbb last year-- I would love a chance to try it again. For me, winter/early spring would work best. I like Backward Bang or maybe Merlin Art Bang.

Also personally, what made rbb fun for me was the collaboration. My artist had a brilliant prompt and loads of fantastic, inspiring ideas for a story-- she just didn't feel like she could write it herself, so working together and expanding on her ideas was such a treat for me. But I will say I ended up with an artist I had worked with before, so we already had a trust between us. :-)

I'll probably post the name options into a poll for people to vote on.

I thought the collabing was half the point of the fest and am actually surprised some don't want it.

YES YES YES

I was a little sad that there didn't seem to be a reverse bang this year, but I'm all for it!!

I've been reading the comments and I really like Merls idea.. with a few modifications. I love collab and would definitely love to do that, but simply putting art out there and writers picking it up - Well as an idea, it is good. But as an insecure artist, it might be heartbreaking and discouraging to see some art picked up by more than one writer but some not picked by any at all.

What if it's a fest instead of a big bang?

Similar to the usual RVBB, you give artist the time to draw as many pieces as they prefer. Then there could be the anonymous claiming with the art rough drafts and the artist and writers working in collaboration.

But in the weeks between posting and claiming, you can ask the artist if they are up for non (or minor) collaborative things, or even publishing of standalone art. You could ask them if they'd like to make new artwork or use the ones they did before. You publish those art (or some of it, depending on how many there are) as prompts (The Art Gallery - as Merls calls it) and the writers can pick them up and write shorter stories ( ~ 2.5k as Dig suggested). This could help the writers that don't have the time or (other factors) to write a bigbang size fic, but still want to participate. If some art is not picked that week, they could be used again the next week (or the next to next week) with some of the other unpublished art. And writers can write as much or as little as they please. (similar to camelot drabble) Maybe if they find new art that inspires them to write a bigbang fic, and the artist is okay with it (collab/minor collab/no collab) then they could still sign up and post with the big bang fics.

I don't know, maybe I'm making more work for you than necessary. Was anything I said clear?

Excuse me, I haven't slept and I went a little crazy. Feel free to ignore.

rbb.jpg

Okay this might be too much

If I remember right RBB usually happened the same time as ACBB, but ofcourse now, the time is past. Sep/October will likely have Halloween/Autumn fest. December will obviously have Christmas/Yule/winter fests. I think we need to keep in mind those that have exams to deal with. Timing is going to be tricky.

Not a clue for the name though. 15 characters is not much. From 'More bang for your buck' to More bang for your pic? Fic for your pic? Pick a pic, write a fic? too long? Sight and Spell? Bebe odothe arisan quicken? (you know, bringing art to life?) too many characters... 'Art of the Deal' (OH GOD why am I quoting Trump) Mordred drew first - okay this is getting ridiculous Imna stop (that was referring to Han shot first. eep sorry)

Date: 2016-08-19 04:02 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] narlth.livejournal.com

That sounds like the idea for two whole comms xD

Again I would worry about people's art not getting chosen week after week.

There's also the possibility of over loading the writers giving them prompts every week, or them only finding something to write a long piece for later on.

I know there was issues with acbb and rvbb clashing last year, so it'll take careful planning this time around.

I can't read the image unfortunately the words come up blurry in my phone, I will have to check it later.

From: [identity profile] lfb72.livejournal.com
First off, I'd love to do a reverse big bang and was so disappointed there was nothing on offer.

Second, well done for stepping up to the plate and offering to organise such a thing - that's a lot of work to take on and if the responses to this post is anything to go by a lot of opposing ideas and opinions to sort through.

I don't know the finer details of how the previous reverse big worked but as an insecure artist I would hope there would be a similar system in place to the ACBB in that perhaps there would be opportunities for pre-matching but when in came to claiming all artists would have to be claimed before writers picked a second artist.

If there was the idea about multiple writers interpreting the same piece of work - perhaps there too could be an upper limit say no more than three and a minimum of one and all pieces would have to have at least one writer before being open to more - to save that horrible situation of people being left on the shelf ?

At the end of the day I'd go with whatever rules you put in place

Hello! I loved the fest and had a great time participating in it in the past. It makes my heart all warm seeing that we still have plenty of people in the fandom interested in writing for it! Personally, I appreciated the idea of RBB being the mirror version of the BB, and I have totally become best friends forever with the artist, so to me collabing is the integral key to the fest. Just my .2 cents.
